父权制 以父系的血缘关系为纽带结成原始社会基本单位的制度。又称父系氏族制。继存时间大体相当于新石器时代晚期至金石并用时代。父权制家庭中的各项事务由父亲或年长男人决定。父亲是家长，是家庭的统治者，妻子及其子女处于附属地位，亲属传袭规则依父系传递并按父系计算。 父权制是继母权制之后产生的。随着生产力的发展，男子的体力比女子强健，男子在劳动中发挥越来越重要的作用，于是男子在家庭中的主导地位便逐步确立。 从母权制向父权制过渡，经历了长期的过程。有些民族和地区经过一个母权与父权并存的时期，才过渡到父权制。根据对中国瑶族原始社会婚姻遗俗的研究，从母权制到父权制经过多种形式的斗争。比如用劳动报酬反对从妻居;用交纳礼银的办法补偿入赘未满的期限;男子入赘后逃婚；为了抗拒从妻居用"抱婚"的办法把姑娘抱回家，等等。 学术界一致认为在家庭发展史上父权制是存在的，分歧点在于有的学者认为人类社会自古至今一直是父权制；而另一些学者认为在父权制之前还有个母权制时期，父权制是家庭发展到一定阶段上的产物。《摩西五经》曾经描写了以父亲和父权为中心的一夫一妻制家庭，并认为它是人类最古老的家庭形式。英国学者H.J.S.梅恩在他所著的《古代法律》(1861)一书中也认为父权制是家庭的最初形式。古希腊悲剧作家埃斯库罗斯的《奥列斯特》三部曲，是用戏剧的形式来描写没落的母权制与发生于英雄时代并获得胜利的父权制的殊死斗争。
