礁  古代称焦炭为礁,又称礁炭、熟炭、燋子、焦子炭。明方以智《物理小识》说:"煤则各处产之,臭者烧熔而闭之成石,再凿而入炉曰礁,可五日不绝火,煎矿煮石,殊为省力。"清初孙廷铨《颜山杂记》对炼焦煤和焦炭性能作了概述:"块者谓之硔,或谓之砟,散无力也。炼而坚之谓之礁,顽于石,重于金铁......故礁出于炭而烈于炭。"    古代选择炼焦煤,主要考虑煤的粘结度和挥发分。据《山西通志》记载,炼焦要选取"多烟、内含油、燃之熔结为一"的煤,其他文献也有类似记载。有些地区称这种煤为油煤、油性炭、粘炭或粘煤。    明代炼焦炉呈长方形或圆形,一般是依地掘坑,下设火道,上堆煤料,用黄土夯筑。炉壁上置一排风眼,待煤料熔融后封闭。成焦时间为 4~10天,以"结为块"、"烟尽为度"。
