自由电子激光器  利用泵浦场被相对论性电子束受激散射产生相干辐射的装置。泵浦场可以是电磁波,也可以是空间周期性的横向静磁场或静电场。由于经过两次多普勒频移,相干辐射的波长比原来泵浦场的波长近似短一个αγ2的因子。λ埄λ0/αγ2,λ0为泵浦场的波长;γ为电子束的相对论性因子,(c为光速,v为电子速度)。对于电磁波泵浦场,α为4,对于静泵浦场,α为2。由于λ0和γ都可以改变,自由电子激光器工作的波长范围很宽,可以从远红外 (25微米以上)一直到真空紫外(0.2微米以下)。此外,由于散射过程直接将电子的动能转换成辐射能,有可能达到较大的功率和较高的效率。自由电子激光器同时具有这些优点的原因,在于它以自由电子进行工作,这与利用束缚电子在能级之间的跃迁来工作的普通激光器有很大的不同。    自由电子激光器通常由三部分组成:电子束源、泵浦场和光频谐振腔。第一次成功的实验是1977年在美国斯坦福大学进行的,得到了波长为3.4微米的激光,图为其实验装置。自由电子激光器的理论和实验都还处于研究阶段。一般认为,它在远红外和真空紫外这两个光谱区是一种很有希望的可调大功率相干光源。
