考德威尔，C. 英国文艺评论家。原名克里斯托夫·圣约翰·斯普里格。生于伦敦郊区帕特尼镇。曾在中学肄业，16岁时辍学，在《约克郡观察家报》充当记者 3年。后在伦敦一家航空出版社任编辑，并创办《航空工程》杂志。曾发表5部航空学著作和7部侦探小说，以及短篇小说和诗。1934年开始钻研马克思主义经典著作，后成为英国早期杰出的马克思主义文艺批评家。1935年秋开始写作《幻觉与现实：诗的源泉研究》一书。这是英国第一部运用历史唯物主义研究文学的重要著作，对诗的产生和发展、诗与语言和社会的关系、英国资本主义各阶段主要诗人的作品，都作了系统的分析和研究，并以诗为例证，批判了作为近代西方文艺评论基础的资产阶级心理学，阐述马克思主义的美学原理和方法。全书经修订后于1937年出版。 1935年12月，考德威尔迁至伦敦码头工人集中的白杨区居住。1936年加入英国共产党。西班牙内战爆发后，英共白杨区支部发动募捐，购买一辆救护车，由考德威尔驾驶经法国送交西班牙共和国政府。他又加入国际纵队英国营，支援西班牙人民的反法西斯斗争，于1937年2 月12日在哈拉马前线牺牲。死后出版的著作还有《垂死的文化论文集》(1938)、《诗集》(1939)、《物理学危机》(1939)、《垂死的文化论文续集》(1949)。
