忻州忻州市位于山西省北中部。北邻大同、朔州、南毗太原，西隔黄河与陕西、内蒙相望，东以太行山与河北省接壤。全区冬无严寒、夏无酷暑，气候宜人、四季分明，堪称物华天宝，人杰地灵。旅游资源丰厚，以佛教圣地五台山为主的风景名胜闻名世界。全区辖忻州、原平两个县级市和定襄、五台、代县、繁峙、宁武、静乐、神池、五寨、岢岚、河曲、保德、偏关12个县，293个乡镇（办事处），5045个村（居委会），总人口288万，其中农业人口232万。人口中以汉族为主，占总人口99以上。总面积2.55万平方公里，土地面积居全省之首。 忻州市历史悠久，文化灿烂。春秋时期大部分为晋地，战国属赵。相传汉高祖北上抗匈奴，兵困平城（今大同），脱围时大军南辙，到忻口方摆脱追兵。高祖破愁而笑，六军欣然如归，因“欣”通“忻”，忻州之名由此而生。忻州市文化积淀深厚，传统艺术源远流长。“摔跤之乡”、“民歌海洋”等赞誉名闻遐迩。 忻州市矿产资源得天独厚。现已知主要有煤、铁、铝、钛、钒、钼、金、银、铜、铅、锌、硅，石英、大理石、花岗岩等50余种。全区含煤面积4386平方公里，地质储量1160亿吨。主要分布于宁武、河曲、五台三个煤田；铁储量17.79亿吨，占全省48.19；铝钒土储量1.38亿吨，占全省17.72；钛矿储量159.26万吨，占全省54.1；金矿储量18508公斤，占全省73.87。 忻州市生物资源丰富。全区有各类树木200种。农作物24个种类，1400余个品种。有野生草种400多种，野生中药材300多种。全区已知的野生动物有184种，其中鸟类148种，兽类36种。国家一类保护动物有褐马鸡、丹顶鹤、黑鹳、白鹳、金钱豹等；二类保护动物有梅花鹿、林麝、兔狲、马鹿、天鹅等；三类保护动物有金雕、青羊、石貂等。高梁、玉米、辣椒、油枣、胡麻、莜麦、党参等都以其特有的品质饮誉国内外 忻州市经济建设发展迅速。建国50年来，特别是改革开放以来，全区经济建设取得了巨大成就。到1997年底，国内生产总值达800245万元，财政总收入实现69284万元，财政支出为94344万元，农民人均纯收入1480元，城乡居民储蓄存款余额为994403万元。以农业为主的第一产业,已初步形成10多个商品生产基地。 种植业方面，主要有以忻州、定襄、原平为主的玉米、高粱商品粮基地；以神池、五寨、岢岚为主的油料基地；以河曲、保德、偏关为主的小杂粮基地；以滹沱河流域为主的水稻基地；以忻州、定襄、原平为主的制种基地；以西部县为主的海红果、油枣基地。
