操作化 将命题和概念转换成可以依据一定的效度和信度进行经验观察的假设和指标的过程。操作化一词的首次使用与直接的物理测量有关，后被广泛地运用于定量研究。在社会学中，它是连接抽象层次的理论与经验层次的事实之间的桥梁。社会学的许多理论术语，如"强化"、"结构"等，运用于经验研究时，必须通过操作化给出操作定义，制定出相应的测量指标。例如，命题"智力越高，学习成就越大"，陈述的是智力和学习成就两个概念间的关系。若作经验测量，则须对两概念分别作出操作化定义，以智商测验的分数作为智力的操作化定义，以学生各科的考试成绩平均值作为学习成就的操作定义。这样，研究者就可根据经验观察对理论命题作出检验。 由于不同概念的抽象程度不同，有些概念需要多个指标来测量。这时，往往先把概念分成若干个方面，然后为每一个方面选择一个或几个指标。例如，R.斯塔克、C.格洛克将宗教这个概念操作化时，确立了宗教的 5个"核心方面"，对其中的每一个方面，再分别给出若干个指标。比如在"宗教实践"方面，给出上教堂和做祈祷频数的指标。由于概念含义的复杂性，使得指标的选择常常带有较大的主观性，并产生出概念测量的效度问题。即对于同一个概念，可能有不同的测量指标，有的确是在测量这一概念，有的却不是测量这一概念。 在进行操作化时，要注意确切弄清概念的哪些维度是研究所真正需要的。有些概念往往存在很多维度，如"政治态度"这一概念就有激进与保守的程度、对执政党的支持程度、对政治活动的参与程度等不同维度。研究者必须事先确定自己感兴趣的维度，否则可能出现本来要测量某一维度而实际测量的却是另一维度的现象。 操作化的程序是否能够成功地对人类行为进行有效的测量，仍然是一个有争议的问题。有些社会学家对操作化持反对意见，认为过于坚持操作化会把社会学研究弄得机械和僵化，使概念凝固。还有的社会学家认为确定操作定义、选择指标等操作，并没有如实地提供一幅社会世界的图景，而是歪曲了它。
