掩星掩星occultation角直径较小的天体在位于地球上观测者的视线方向上被月面或行星遮蔽的现象。包括月掩星、月掩射电源、月掩行星、行星掩星、行星掩射电源等。因为白道在天球上不断移动,月球视直径可达30′,故月掩其他天体的机会很多。利用月掩星观测可以精确测量月球运动,测定历书时,利用月球和行星掩射电源可以测定射电源的位置和结构细节,达到很高的分辨率。1977年3月,中国、美国等国家的天文学家通过对天王星掩恒星SAO158687的观测发现了天王星环,成为20世纪重大天文发现之一。
