自电离  原子由于两个价电子被激发而产生的电离过程。具有两个以上电子的原子,由于受电子碰撞或吸收光子,可能有两个价电子同时跃迁到激发态,成为双重激发原子。如果其总激发能大于原子的第一电离电位,则此双重激发态将位于原子能级图的连续能谱区。这种双重激发原子可能是不稳定的,其中一个电子会返回基态,另一个电子则脱离原子成为自由电子,其动能等于总激发能与第一电离电位之差。    以氦(He)原子为例, 图a是一个价电子被激发时的能级示意图。阴影区代表连续能谱区,它由第一电离电位Vi起向上扩展,Vi=24.58eV。图b表示氦原子的一个双重激发态高于Vi约36eV,因而会发生自电离。
