双折射双折射doublerefraction光波射入各向异性晶体后,在晶体内产生两束折射光的现象。1669年由丹麦医生、数学教授E.巴托林在方解石中发现。两束折射光中,一束光的波速与传播方向无关(相应的折射率为常量),遵守通常的折射定律,称为寻常光,简称o光;另一束光的波速随传播方向而变(相应的折射率随方向而变),一般不遵守折射定律,即折射光线一般不在入射面内,入射角与折射角的正弦之比一般不是常数,称为非常光,简称e光。晶体内存在一特殊方向,寻常光和非常光沿此方向传播时具有相同的波速,因而不发生双折射,此特殊方向称为晶体的光轴。有的晶体只有一个光轴,称单轴晶体,如方解石、石英、红宝石和冰等;另一些晶体有两个光轴,称双轴晶体,如云母、蓝宝石、橄榄石和结晶硫等。双轴晶体中的两束折射光一般都是非常光。晶体内包含o光光线和光轴的平面称为o光的主平面,包含e光光线和光轴的平面称e光的主平面。实验表明,o光和e光均是严格的线偏振光,o光电矢量的振动方向与o光的主平面垂直,e光电矢量的振动方向与e光主平面平行。双折射现象是晶体各向异性的具体表现。最初C.惠更斯曾利用由他提出的惠更斯原理借助于几何作图法解释了双折射现象,光的电磁理论发展后,可从理论上证明晶体中o光和e光的波速(及折射率)的不同,以及e光波速(及折射率)随方向而变的规律,从而透彻地解释了双折射现象。各种偏振器件,如偏振片、偏振棱镜、波片和补偿器等都是利用了晶体的双折射性质制造的,双折射性质也为鉴别和分析各种矿物晶体提供了依据。人工双折射在光测弹性、光波调制、高速光开关等技术领域更有着广泛应用。
