沙鼠亚科  啮齿目仓鼠科的 1亚科。通称沙鼠。因栖息于干旱的荒漠地区而得名。体小型,体长7~20厘米;头圆、眼大,耳壳较短;毛呈沙黄色;听泡发达、听觉灵敏;后肢长为前肢的1~2倍,适于跳跃;尾较长,一般等于或略大于体长,跳跃时起保持身体平衡的作用。共15属71种,广泛分布于非洲、亚洲和欧洲的荒漠草原、山麓荒漠、戈壁和沙漠。有的种类也侵入到开垦后的农田地区。中国有3属7种,短耳沙鼠是中国特有种,分布于新疆维吾尔自治区南部、内蒙古自治区西部和甘肃省西部。    生活在开旷的荒漠地区,依靠复杂的洞系、灵敏的听觉和迅速跳跃来逃避敌害。有的白天活动,有的夜间活动。不冬眠。主要以植物为食。一生中很少喝水或完全不喝水,仅靠摄取食物中的水分来满足需要。沙鼠具发达的爪,善于挖掘复杂的洞系。尤以大沙鼠最突出,每1个大沙鼠的洞系有洞口几十个到上百个,内有窝、"仓库"、"厕所",洞道相互交错,分为2~3层。在这种复杂的洞系中,有相对稳定的小气候。沙鼠在春末夏初开始繁殖,年产2~3胎,每胎产仔3~8只。寿命约2年。    沙鼠因贮存食物和挖掘复杂洞系而给农牧业带来严重危害。如在新疆的沙漠中,一大沙鼠洞系中贮存牧草达40千克;内蒙古的一长爪沙鼠洞系中挖出存粮达32.5千克。沙鼠还是许多疾病的传播者。长爪沙鼠和小亚细亚沙鼠对许多疾病有高度的敏感性,且易饲养和繁殖,已被作为实验动物。
