奎年,P.H. 荷兰海洋地质学家。1902年 7月22日生于苏格兰东部的邓迪,1976年12月去世。早年在荷兰莱顿大学学习,毕业后留校任教,1926年任该校副教授,1934年后在葛罗宁根大学任教,1946年任教授。以开创20世纪50~60年代海洋地质研究的新局面而闻名,在沉积构造、盐丘、火山锥和地层褶皱的模拟实验方面做了开拓性的工作,在珊瑚礁、海底峡谷和海底火山活动的研究中也有贡献。最突出的贡献是在海底浊流沉积方面。浊流说创立于20世纪30年代,但直到50年代初期,才由他用实验模拟高密度浊流的流动特点,再现了浊流沉积物的主要结构特征,证实了递度层理的浊流成因。而后又联系海底峡谷的成因,论证了深海的浊流活动和浊积岩的分布规律,并在此基础上,对阿尔卑斯山的巨厚复理石沉积提出了深海浊流成因的解释,动摇了"大陆上无深海沉积"的传统观点。奎年著述很多,以1950年出版的《海洋地质学》为著名。这部著作与F.P.谢泼德的《海底地质学》及M.B.克列诺娃的《海洋地质学》,标志着海洋地质学的建立。
