攀西地区  中国西南地区大型钢铁、钒钛冶炼基地和水电基地。四川蔗糖基地。位于四川省西南,在安宁河、金沙江和雅砻江交汇处。行政上包括攀枝花市和凉山彝族自治州,共计20县、市。南起攀枝花,北到冕宁,纵贯340公里,面积6.36万平方公里,人口451.55万。    攀西地区地质构造上属于华力西-印支期古裂谷带(即攀西裂谷)和凉山褶皱带。埋藏有多种矿床,已探明有大型钒钛磁铁矿、铜、铅、锌、锡、煤等54种矿产,其中铁矿储量约达60多亿吨,为中国第2大铁矿基地。铁矿中绝大部分为钒钛磁铁矿,属多金属共生矿。除铁外,还有二氧化钛、五氧化二钒及铬、钪、钴、镍、镓、铂等12种有色金属和稀有金属。会理、会东、甘洛、宁南等地的铜、铅、锌、锡储量也大。贵金属黄金也有较好远景。此外,非金属矿产中,石灰岩、白云岩、硅石、大理岩、石墨、水晶等矿产资源也很丰富。探明的煤矿储量达10亿吨,煤炭品种较全,含磷、硫和灰分均较低。攀西地区水力资源丰富,附近的金沙江、雅砻江和安宁河水力蕴藏量达4003万千瓦,约占中国的6%,具有建立钢铁与冶金基地的能源条件。    攀西地区山场广阔,河谷地区光热资源充足,有发展农、林、牧、副的优越条件。安宁河谷历来是四川西南的"粮仓"。甘蔗产量也占四川15%。攀西地区的山羊、绵羊头数分别占四川1/5与1/8,为四川牧区之一。森林蓄积量2.1亿立方米,是四川主要的云南松林区和三大林区之一,也是四川唯一适于发展南亚热带经济林木之地。金沙江、雅砻江和安宁河谷下游盛产香蕉、荔枝、菠萝、芒果、木瓜及剑麻、三叶橡胶和品质优良的苹果、梨、石榴等温带水果。
