西州 唐在今新疆境内所置三州之一。贞观始置,天宝、至德时改名交河郡。领高昌、柳中、交河、蒲昌、天山五县，治高昌（今新疆吐鲁番东南高昌故城，即哈拉和卓古城）。宝应元年（762）后改高昌为前庭。（见彩图） 唐贞观十四年（640）灭高昌麹氏王朝,以其地设西昌州（不久改称西州），并设安西都护府于交河（今新疆吐鲁番西）城。显庆三年 (658)都护府移治龟兹。开元二年（714）设天山军于州城内,驻兵五千，马五百匹。安史之乱后，吐蕃陷陇右,西域被隔断,当地居民闭境固守,至贞元七年(791)始为吐蕃占领。咸通七年(866),北庭回鹘仆固俊破吐蕃取得西州，名义上复归于唐，成为归义军节度使所辖的一州（见沙州归义军）。 西州天宝时有居民近五万人，大部分是汉魏以来屯戍当地的汉人后裔，又有昭武九姓及西突厥等民族。唐在此推行了均田制、租庸调、府兵制、学校等与内地相同的政治、军事、经济及文化制度。 西州地处盆地，东西八百里，南北五百里，扼天山南北孔道，又当中西交通要冲。谷麦一岁再熟，盛产葡萄、布（即棉布）。是唐朝经营西域的军事重地，其州治还是中西经济、文化交流的重要城市。 20世纪以来，在唐西州故城及其附近的洞窟、墓葬中，出土许多文物和唐西州时期的官私文书（见吐鲁番文书）。
