p90外形相当怪异独特,初露面是让人感觉好像科幻片中的武器。全枪长约50cm,无托结构,重量轻,携行方便。p90采用模块式设计,可分为4个部分:枪机组件、整体式枪托、枪管及瞄具组件、弹匣。在全部的69个零件中有27件为塑料件。p90的自动方式为自由枪机式,闭膛待击,枪机较重,以控制枪机后坐。发射机构在整体式枪托中,发射机座、击锤、扳机和整体式枪托均为工程塑料件。枪托底板有软橡胶,打开枪托底板里面有附品筒,枪管通条刷头、通条链和油布都放在附品筒内。抛壳口可以挂上一个弹壳收集袋,这是应特种部队的要求制作的。p90的快慢机位于扳机下方,有“a”、“i”、“s”三个位置,分别代表全自动、半自动和保险。由于快慢机的位置和形式,用扣扳机的手指都可以很方便地控制。枪管组件由拉机柄、坚固但不昂贵的准直式光学瞄具和枪管组成。拉机柄有两个,位置枪管左右两侧,虽然全枪长度短,但由于采用无托结构,枪管长度有230mm。枪口消焰器有防跳功能,除了在前端面为斜切口外,还有四个分成两排向左右上方的开孔。(在投产初期的p90没有斜切口,有六个分成两排的开孔)p90发射新开发的5.7×28mm小口径高速弹,50发容量的弹匣平行于枪管上方,弹匣由半透明的塑料制成,为防止夜间反光,混入了着色材料,呈浅褐色。由于弹匣内的枪弹与枪管轴线垂直,因此弹匣入口部是圆柱形,内部有引导枪弹转向90度的螺旋槽。p90的野战分解非常容易,经简单训练就可在15秒内完成不完全分解,方便保养和维护。下面就是它的分解过程
