北极鸟类据估计，地球上约有9000余种鸟类，分为27个目，160多个科。那么，有哪些鸟类与北极有关系呢？据统计，北极的鸟类共有120多种，其中多为候鸟，常驻的鸟类有12种。而在南极，鸟类只有43种，永久性的居民大概只有企鹅和贼鸥而已。而企鹅到底算不算鸟类，至今仍然大有争议。 生活在北半球的所有鸟类，大约有1／6要到北极繁殖后代。据一位在北极草原观察和研究了10多年的鸟类专家说，光在阿拉斯加北极地区，就有来自世界各地的候鸟在这里安家落户。例如，绒鸭来自阿留申群岛，苔原天鹅来自美洲东海岸，黑雁来自墨西哥，塞贝尼海鸥来自智利，麦耳鸟来自东非，短尾海鸥来自塔斯马尼亚，滨鹬来自马来西亚和中国东海岸。也就是说，北极是全世界几乎所有候鸟的乐园和故土。这是因为，北极不仅有辽阔的草原，丰富的食物，而且还有安静而干净的环境，很少人类干扰，南极则没有这个条件。所以.南极的候鸟只能在附近作短距离的南北迁移，飞得最远的是信天翁，可以绕南极作长距离的迁移，但却并不住北飞行。而南半球的许多候鸟宁肯迢迢数万里飞到北极来越冬，却不愿意到南极去送死 因此，对于鸟类王国来说，北极是其活动的中心，而南极充其量也不过是一块极少有鸟愿意光顾的属地。
