瑟瑟中国拨奏弦鸣乐器。瑟的历史在《诗经》中已有记载。考古发现最早的实物为出土于湖南长沙浏城桥一号楚墓,约为春秋晚期或战国早期制品。此外,在河南、湖北、湖南等地,均发现战国至汉代制品。出土的瑟为长方形木质音箱,瑟面张弦,弦下设调节有效弦长的弦柱。多为25弦,也有24或23弦的。据柱位较清楚的长沙马王堆一号汉墓出土的25弦瑟推算,它按五声音阶定弦。在古代乡饮酒礼中,瑟为歌唱伴奏。魏、晋、南北朝时期,为相和歌伴奏。隋唐时期用于清乐。宋以后只用于宫廷雅乐。同时,据唐宋以来文献所载,以及明清宫廷所用的瑟,与周汉时期的出土实物在形制、张弦、定弦方面有很大差异。后瑟失传。
