湖北钉螺(钉螺蛳、钉螺、有肋钉螺)国内分布于浙江、江苏,安徽、江西、湖北、湖南、广东及广西;国外尚未发见。个体较小,壳高约6.66毫米,宽2.7毫米,壳厚,坚固,外形近长圆锥形。具6-9个螺层,各螺层均膨胀,螺旋部高。壳顶尖,缝合线较深。壳面淡灰色,并具有粗、细相间的纵肋,其中粗纵肋排列稀疏,而细纵肋则排列稠密。壳口近卵圆形,周边完整,具有黑色框边。厣为角质薄片,具有螺旋形生长纹,厣核多偏于内侧下方。水陆两栖螺类。幼螺多喜欢在水中生活,成螺一般喜生活在水线以上潮湿地带的草丛中。由于栖息环境不同、形态变异很大。一年四季均可繁殖,但以春、秋季最为旺盛。孵出的幼螺在食物丰富、气温适宜的情况下,两个月即可发育成熟。重要的医学贝类,为日本血吸虫及并殖吸虫的中间宿主。
