洪江古商城保存的古建筑群，堪称我国江南民居古建筑之精典，《清明上河图》的活版本，属全国罕见。如果把它作为湖南的重点人文景观开发出来，它将成为湖南旅游业的又一品牌。地处湘西雪峰山边陲的古城洪江，明末清初曾以集散洪油、木材、鸦片、白腊而名扬一时，是滇、黔、桂、湘、蜀五省地区的物资集散地，享有“小南京”、“西南大都会”之美誉。洪江古商城由来已久，只是“藏在深闺人未识”。据专家考证，现仍保存完好的明、清古建筑，如窨子屋、寺院、古庙、钱庄、商号、洋行、作坊、店铺、客栈、青楼、报社、烟馆等共380多栋，总面积约20余万平方米。洪江古商城的窨子屋大多建于明末清初，为斗拱造型，一色的青瓦灰墙，飞檐翘角，雕龙画凤。这些古窨屋建筑群一律按井字排列，错落有致，形成“七冲、八巷、九条街”的独特格局。古窨屋群巷内，青石板路和码头蜿蜒迂回、高深莫测。有康熙、乾隆、道光、同治、光绪、民国时期的门匾、门联、石雕、石刻、题字等，随处可见；有图案精美、雕工精湛、风格各异的用于防火的太平缸48多个。专家说，这里不失为大西南最早、最大、最完整的古商城。截止目前，已有许多海内外的专家、学者、知名人士，以及新闻媒体前往洪江古商城考察、采访。香港凤凰卫视对此作了专题报道。目前，当地政府已经采取得力措施，加强对洪江古商城的保护工作。2006年6月10日，国务院颁布第6批全国重点文物保护单位名单，洪江古商城以“洪江古建筑群”的名义名添榜上。
