小壳化石  一些寒武纪最早期海生无脊椎动物的泛称,特指寒武纪最早期海相地层中出现的原始带壳小动物化石。已发现有最原始的软舌螺、似软舌螺类(Hyolithelmithes)、单板类、双壳类、腹足类、喙壳类、腕足类、海绵类、锥石类、节肢动物、 管状化石(tubular fossils)、牙形刺状化石(conodont-like fos-sils)、 球状化石(globular fossils)和其他一些分类位置尚不明的动物化石,如腔骨类(coeloscleritophoran)、 托莫特类(tommotiids)、开腔骨针类(chancelloriids)、拟骨状壳类(paracariuachitiids)、 织金壳类(zhijinitids)。这些化石往往共生在一起,组成一个丰富的多门类动物群,其中以中国扬子地台寒武系最底部的梅树村阶动物群和苏联西伯利亚地台的托莫特动物群为最典型。这些化石的特点是个体小,肉眼难以见到,大小在0.1~5毫米左右。其形态多种多样,如软舌螺类、似软舌螺类、拟牙形刺类大多呈锥形;腹足类大多呈旋转锥形;单板类、多板类、腕足类大多呈帽形、贝壳形;海绵呈针形、放射形;锥石类多呈锥管状,腔骨类、托莫特类、开腔骨针类、织金壳类呈多骨片或多骨针系列等等。小壳化石分布广数量多,在世界各大洲都有发现,而且已成为寒武纪最早期建阶划带的标准化石,也是划分前寒武纪和寒武纪地层界线最重要的古生物依据。此外,数量上的突发性和特征上的原始性,更引起人们的注意。小壳化石繁盛于软躯体动物群(伊迪卡拉动物群)之后,三叶虫动物群之前。在前寒武纪末期几乎没有发现,而在寒武纪一开始便突然大量出现。在形态特征上它们又各自与稍晚一些时候的有关古动物门类相类似,但又存在很多的差异,表现了早期小壳化石的原始性。这种原始性对于研究后生动物的发生、进化具有十分重要的意义。
