硅藻  藻类植物中的一个类群,有人定为硅藻门 (Bacil-lariophyta),有人定为硅藻纲 (Bacillariophyceae)。硅藻是单细胞种类,少数为群体。细胞壁高度硅质化,成为坚硬的壳体,壳体由上、下两个半壳套合而成。光合作用色素主要有叶绿素a、叶绿素c和胡萝卜素、岩藻黄素、硅藻甲黄素等,因此,它的色素体呈黄绿色或黄褐色。    硅藻的多数种类为水生,以浮游生活为主,也有些种类附生在水中各种基质或其他水生植物体上。少数硅藻生于土壤中,羽纹硅藻在每立方厘米土壤中可达一亿个。    硅藻种类繁多,对水质的适应能力各不相同,在20世纪初即已被用作水污染指示生物。直链藻属(Melosira)和桥穹藻属(Cуmbella)的一些种是多污带的指示种;冠盘藻(Stephanodiscus hantzschii)、狭窄菱形藻(Nitzschia angustata)、尖菱形藻 (N.apiculata)等是甲型中污带的指示种; 孟氏小环藻 (Cуclotella meneghiniana)、钝脆杆藻(Fragilaria capucina)、尖针杆藻(Sуnedra acus)、肘状针杆藻(S.ulna)等是乙型中污带的指示种;羽纹脆杆藻 (F.pinnata)、连结脆杆藻凸腹变种(F.construens var.venter)、长等片藻(Diatoma elongatum)、冬季等片藻(D.hiemale)、窗格平板藻(Tabellaria fenestriata)等是寡污带的指示种。    硅藻细胞壁外的胶状膜能吸附放射性物质,致使一些敏感种迅速死亡,因此,硅藻又可作为放射性物质的指示植物。有些种类,如普通等片藻 (D.valgare)耐油性很强,又可作为油污染的指示种。    硅藻的分布受地区、季节、水温、盐度等各种因素的影响,因此,各地区常见的指示种不完全一致。有一些种类是广布性的,适应性很强,各种污染带均会出现,在利用硅藻指示水体污染时,应注意识别。
