南雄盆地南雄盆地是坐落在大玉岭山脉南坡,南岭东缘的一个山间盆地。南雄龙是发掘自南雄盆地中最有趣的一种恐龙。南雄盆地大约80公里长,呈东北─西南走向,18公里宽,堆积了4000公尺的陆相沈积岩层。这些岩石分为下部与上部。而下部岩石即是南雄群地层,发掘到古新世(新生代最早期)的哺乳类──全齿亚目化石。有些地质学者宣称在这个盆地中,地层层序正好通过了中生代与新生代的界限,成为研究白垩纪/第三纪大灭绝事件最理想的地点。中国地质工作者与古生物学者曾经在这个盆地做了详尽的岩层与不同化石族群的研究。同时在过去五年间,系列的恐龙蛋化石陆续为中德调查队发掘。经过这些恐龙蛋标本的分析显示恐龙蛋壳越来越变薄而脆弱,由於缺少微量元素的供给所致。这或许在大灭绝原因探讨中也扮演着一个有趣的因素。短棘南雄龙是根据不完整的骨骼化石,包括了11个颈椎(仅缺失环椎),10个背椎,5个荐椎,第一个尾椎,并且伴随着一个完整的髋骨(骨盘)腰带。这只恐龙颈项很短,前方颈椎是呈两凹型,後方颈椎则是呈後凹型。背椎是两凹型;侧腔很浅,而背部神经棘低平而宽阔。五个荐椎结合在一起,而荐椎神经棘低平同时连结在一起;尾椎则是两凹型。南雄龙由於具有极为特殊的腰带构造而被归属为慢龙类。在腰带上,骼骨(肠骨)很低平,前方骨突发育良好并向外伸出;耻骨直线型,外缘很厚;座骨很薄似板状後端延伸并接合。髋骨臼大而圆形。所有这些特徵都说明它归属到慢龙类。一般推断,慢龙类具有一个长而低平的头骨,纤细的牙齿,大而尖锐的喙部,被认为是觅食鱼类,生活在湖泊或者河流岸边的。南雄小鸭嘴龙是一种体型较小的鸭嘴龙类,标本是根据一件下颔骨,平直,具有密集的齿列及垂直的齿槽。这种恐龙可能体长不超过3公尺,是中国所有恐龙类族群中最小的种属。
