环境容量 在人类生存和自然生态不致受害的前提下，某一环境所能容纳的污染物的最大负荷量。 环境容量是在环境管理中实行污染物浓度控制时提出的概念。污染物浓度控制的法令规定了各个污染源排放污染物的容许浓度标准，但没有规定排入环境中的污染物的数量,也没有考虑环境净化和容纳的能力,这样在污染源集中的城市和工矿区，尽管各个污染源排放的污染物达到（包括稀释排放而达到的）浓度控制标准，但由于污染物排放的总量过大，仍然会使环境受到严重污染。因此，在环境管理上开始采用总量控制法，即把各个污染源排入某一环境的污染物总量限制在一定的数值之内。采用总量控制法，必须研究环境容量问题。 一个特定的环境（如一个自然区域、一个城市、一个水体）对污染物的容量是有限的。其容量的大小与环境空间的大小、各环境要素的特性、污染物本身的物理和化学性质有关。环境空间越大，环境对污染物的净化能力就越大,环境容量也就越大。对某种污染物而言,它的物理和化学性质越不稳定，环境对它的容量也就越大。环境容量包括绝对容量和年容量两个方面。 绝对容量 环境的绝对容量(WQ)是某一环境所能容纳某种污染物的最大负荷量，达到绝对容量没有时间限制，即与年限无关。环境绝对容量由环境标准的规定值(WS)和环境背景值(B)来决定。数学表达式有以浓度单位表示的和以重量单位表示的两种。以浓度单位表示的环境绝对容量的计算公式为：
