《类篇》 一部按部首编排的字书。宋仁宗宝元二年(1039)十一月丁度等奏称："今修《集韵》，添字既多，与顾野王《玉篇》不相参协，欲乞委修韵官将新韵添入，别为《类篇》，与《集韵》相副施行。"仁宗命王洙、胡宿、掌禹锡、张次立等人相继修纂，到英宗治平三年(1066)由司马光接代，业已成书，治平四年缮写成功，上之于朝。旧称司马光撰，实际只是由司马光整理成书而已。 《集韵》是仁宗景祐四年(1037)命丁度、宋祁等开始修纂的，到英宗治平四年同为司马光编定成书。《集韵》 按韵编字，《类篇》 接部首编字，两书相辅而行。《类篇》依据《说文解字》分为14篇，又目录1篇,共15篇。每篇又各分上、中、下，合为45卷。全书的部首为540部，与《说文解字》相同,部首排列的次序变动也很少。本书是直接承接《说文解字》和《玉篇》的一部字书。所收字数 31319字,比《玉篇》增多一倍。《集韵》遗漏的字也都尽量收入，但《集韵》书中冗杂的重文就不尽采录，体例比较严谨。每字下先列反切，后出训解；如果字有异音异义，则分别举出，可与《集韵》相印证。且书中收有唐宋之间所产生的字不少，为研究文字发展的重要参考资料。旧刻有清代曹寅所刻《楝亭五种本》，现在通用的是后来姚觐元的翻刻本，即一般所说的《姚刻三韵本》。(见彩图)
