火星探测器“火星探路者”号探测器 1997年7月4日，携带火星探路者的飞船进入火星大气层，由降落伞带着以每小时88.5公里的速度飘向火星表面，并在着陆前数秒钟打开九个巨大的保护气囊。17时07分火星探路者在火星降落，在密封气囊的保护下，经过一番弹跳翻滚之后，在火星表面停了下来。 着陆成功后，飞船打开外侧的三个电池板，重10公斤的6轮“旅居者”号火星车缓缓驶离飞船，落到火星地表。其行进路线是预先确定好的，首先朝目标区西南部的一个长100公里、宽19.3公里椭圆形区域缓慢行进。在探测区，经对由古代洪水冲刷形成的一个488平方米的小岛作详尽观察，科学家发现火星山谷平原暴发过多次洪水，并有众多由水冲击而来的圆形岩石，其中许多岩石沿同方向排列，表明它们受到同样水流的冲击。科学家推测当时洪水有数百公里宽，水流量为每秒100万立方米。“火星观察者”号探测器 1992年9月25日，火星观察者号探测器发射成功。它重2.5吨，携带7部仪器。经11个月飞行7.2亿公里后，到达距火星表面378公里的近极轨道，对火星进行长达687天的观测考察，绘制整个火星表面图，预告火星天候，测量火星各种数据，进一步揭示火星上有无处于原始阶段的生命现象，为未来人类移居火星探寻道路。但是1993年8月21日，火星观察者号探测器突然与地面失去联系，不再发回信息。这次探测令人失望地夭拆了。前苏联的火星探测计划 前苏联的火星探测计划可谓路途坎坷：1962年11月1日发射的火星1号在距地球1亿多公里的地方通信中断，考察失败；1971年5月19日发射的火星2号探测器，着陆舱在火星上着陆,但却失去联系；火星3号探测器虽然到达火星，但未完成预定的探测计划；火星4号未能进入火星轨道；火星5号虽然入轨，但工作时间很短；火星6号着陆失败，飘入苍茫天宇，不知去向。福波斯1号在宇宙空间已失去联系；福波斯2号对火卫一考察一段时间后，又出现故障。火星－96飞船发射后因故障坠入大海。 连连受挫，前苏联不得不重新考虑自己的火星探测计划。
