锰锰manganese一种化学元素。化学符号Mn，原子序数25，原子量54.93805，属周期系ⅦB族。1774年瑞典C.W.舍勒在从软锰矿制得氯气时，确定该矿中含有一种新的元素。同年，瑞典J.G.甘恩用炭还原软锰矿，制得了金属锰，因为软锰矿具有磁性，故以希腊文magnes(含义是“磁石”)命名。锰在地壳中的含量为0.085％，锰的矿物主要有软锰矿(MnO2)、硬锰矿(mMnO·MnO2·nH2O)、水锰矿(Mn2O3·H2O)、褐锰矿(Mn2O3)、黑锰矿(Mn3O4)、菱锰矿(MnCO3)、蔷薇辉石(MnO·SiO2)。由于锰和铁、钴、镍的性质相似，所以铁矿中也常含有锰。蕴藏在海底的锰结核是锰、镍、钴的复合矿物，含锰量为15％～30％，据估计，在整个海底，锰结核约有1.5万亿吨。锰是钢灰色有光泽的金属，性脆，熔点1244℃，沸点1962℃，密度7.20克／厘米3。锰是比较活泼的金属，在空气中比较容易被氧化，形成褐色的层状氧化物覆盖物，最靠近金属的是MnO，外层是Mn3O4。锰在加热时燃烧，生成Mn3O4。在加热时，锰与氟、氯、溴作用，生成相应的卤化物。在赤热下，与硫反应生成MnS。在1200℃以上，氮与锰反应，生成Mn5N2。熔融的金属锰能溶解碳，生成Mn3C。锰能与冷水作用：Mn＋2H2OMn(OH)2＋H2锰易溶于稀酸，溶于盐酸放出氢，溶于浓硫酸放出二氧化硫，溶于硝酸放出一氧化氮。锰的氧化态为－1、－3、＋1、＋2、＋3、＋4、＋5、＋6、＋7。＋2价锰盐和＋7价高锰酸盐在溶液中比其他价态稳定。＋2价的氧化锰是碱性的，不溶于水，溶于酸生成＋2价锰盐。锰一共能生成6种氧化物：MnO、Mn3O4、Mn2O3、MnO2、MnO3、Mn2O7。在低温和不见光的条件下，二氧化锰与浓盐酸作用，可生成＋4价锰盐，但在稀释或受热时即转化为氯和二氯化锰。＋6价的锰酸盐只存在于碱性溶液中，酸化后即发生歧化反应，生成高锰酸盐和二价锰盐。金属锰的生产方法有：①铝热法。用金属铝做还原剂，将Mn3O4还原为金属锰。②电热法。在电炉中用木炭还原富锰渣。③电解法。用不锈钢做阴极，铅板做阳极，硫酸锰溶液为电解质，可得纯度为99.9％的金属锰。锰是脆性金属，不能做结构材料，但钢中加锰后能起细化结晶组织的作用，并因形成碳化物而提高强度，锰钢可用于结构钢、钢轨和弹簧钢。锰还是炼钢时的去氧剂和脱硫剂。锰是动植物机体的微量组分，某些锰盐可做微量元素化肥和动物饲料添加剂。二氧化锰用于生产干电池和玻璃、陶瓷工业。
