凝胶凝胶gel分散系统的一种特殊形式，其中胶体粒子或高聚物分子相互联结，搭起架子形成空间网状结构，液体或气体充满结构的空隙中。其性质介于固体和液体之间。根据分散相质点的性质（刚性或柔性），将凝胶分为刚性凝胶和弹性凝胶两大类。多数无机凝胶（如Fe2O3凝胶）属于前者，而高分子凝胶（如橡胶）属于后者。由固体（干凝胶）和溶胶出发都能制成凝胶。干胶吸收液体后膨胀即形成弹性凝胶，此法仅限于高聚物。由溶胶（或溶液）在适当条件下转变成凝胶的过程称胶凝作用。胶凝可通过冷却溶液、加入非水溶剂、加电解质及化学反应等手段来实现。弹性凝胶由线性高分子构成，因其分子链有柔性，当吸收与它亲合性很强的液体时，体积就发生膨胀作用。这种膨胀可以是有限的，也可以是无限的。凝胶在老化过程中发生特殊的分层现象，称为脱水收缩作用。分层后，其中的一层是浓度比原来大的凝胶，而另一层是稀溶胶或高分子稀溶液。凝胶具有电导和扩散作用，在低浓度凝胶中，电导值及扩散速度与纯液体几乎相同，但两者都随凝胶浓度的增大而减小。凝胶中可以进行化学反应，由于无对流存在，反应生成的不溶物在凝胶中具有周期性分布。另外，凝胶的网状骨架往往对大小不同的分子具有分离作用。
