铯铯cesium一种化学元素。化学符号Cs,原子序数55,原子量132.90543,属周期系IA族,为碱金属的成员和稀有金属。1860年德国R.W.本生和G.R.基尔霍夫将瑞典丢克海姆地方的矿泉水浓缩后,用光谱分析发现一种新的碱金属元素,取名cesium,该字来源于拉丁文caesius,含义是蔚蓝的天空。铯在地壳中的含量为3.2×10-4%,主要矿物有铯榴石(2Cs2O·2Al2O3·9SiO2·H2O),含氧化铯34.6%;还有硼铯铷矿,含氧化铯3.5%,铯绿柱石,含氧化铯1.7%~3.6%。已经发现的铯的放射性同位素共有34个。铯是金黄色金属,很软,可用小刀切割。熔点28.4℃,沸点669.3℃,密度1.8785克/厘米3(15℃)。在碱金属中,铯的电离势和电子逸出功最小,因此,它比其他碱金属要活泼得多。在室温下,金属铯在空气中猛烈燃烧,在纯氧中则会发生爆炸,生成超氧化铯。铯与水剧烈作用,甚至与-116℃的冰也能剧烈反应,生成氢氧化铯和氢气。因此,铯必须在严密隔绝空气的情况下保存在液体石蜡中。铯与有限量氧气作用,可生成氧化铯,还能与卤素发生反应。铯的氧化态为+1,只生成+1价化合物。铯离子能使火焰染成蓝紫色,可用焰色反应和火焰光度计检测。由于金属铯十分活泼,不能用电解法生产,必须在小于133.322×10-3帕的真空下用钙还原氯化铯制取铯。铯的主要用途是制造光电池、光电倍增管、电视摄像管,还用作真空管中的吸气剂。铯的另一重要用途是制造铯原子钟,1976年国际度量衡局规定1原子秒相当于133Cs原子基态的2个超精细能级之间跃迁所对应的辐射的9192631770个周期的持续时间,铯原子钟的准确度可达到500万年误差仅1秒的水平。
