铯铯cesium一种化学元素。化学符号Cs，原子序数55，原子量132.90543，属周期系IA族，为碱金属的成员和稀有金属。1860年德国R.W.本生和G.R.基尔霍夫将瑞典丢克海姆地方的矿泉水浓缩后，用光谱分析发现一种新的碱金属元素，取名cesium，该字来源于拉丁文caesius，含义是蔚蓝的天空。铯在地壳中的含量为3.2×10-4％，主要矿物有铯榴石（2Cs2O·2Al2O3·9SiO2·H2O)，含氧化铯34.6％；还有硼铯铷矿，含氧化铯3.5％，铯绿柱石，含氧化铯1.7％～3.6％。已经发现的铯的放射性同位素共有34个。铯是金黄色金属，很软，可用小刀切割。熔点28.4℃，沸点669.3℃，密度1.8785克／厘米3(15℃)。在碱金属中，铯的电离势和电子逸出功最小，因此，它比其他碱金属要活泼得多。在室温下，金属铯在空气中猛烈燃烧，在纯氧中则会发生爆炸，生成超氧化铯。铯与水剧烈作用，甚至与－116℃的冰也能剧烈反应，生成氢氧化铯和氢气。因此，铯必须在严密隔绝空气的情况下保存在液体石蜡中。铯与有限量氧气作用，可生成氧化铯，还能与卤素发生反应。铯的氧化态为＋1，只生成＋1价化合物。铯离子能使火焰染成蓝紫色，可用焰色反应和火焰光度计检测。由于金属铯十分活泼，不能用电解法生产，必须在小于133.322×10-3帕的真空下用钙还原氯化铯制取铯。铯的主要用途是制造光电池、光电倍增管、电视摄像管，还用作真空管中的吸气剂。铯的另一重要用途是制造铯原子钟，1976年国际度量衡局规定1原子秒相当于133Cs原子基态的2个超精细能级之间跃迁所对应的辐射的9192631770个周期的持续时间，铯原子钟的准确度可达到500万年误差仅1秒的水平。
