偏振光度计  测定天体辐射偏振的仪器。1946年昌德拉塞卡从理论上推断,电子散射使早型星的圆面边缘的辐射呈现部分偏振,以后,通过观测发现了星光偏振和星际磁场。天体辐射的偏振大多是很小的,而望远镜光学系统和探测器又都会产生仪器偏振。因此,对偏振计设计的一个基本要求,就是尽量消除仪器偏振的影响。一般是通过观测邻近零偏振的恒星来校准。此外,使镜筒绕光轴转动,也能彻底消除仪器偏振。偏振光度计按接收电路可分成直流和交流两类;按光学设计又可分为单臂和双臂两类。单臂偏振计是在望远镜焦面光阑后面安置一偏光棱镜。星光通过它,落到光电倍增管上,光电流经放大后或被记录或被显示。如要进行椭圆偏振光或圆偏振光的分析,在光路中还应加上1/4波片。双臂偏振计采用的是双折射偏光棱镜,将星光分解成互相垂直的线偏振,分别用两个光电倍增管接收,记录两束光的光流量之比,或它们的和与差,目的是抵消大气闪烁影响。实践表明,对于亮星,双臂偏振计的观测精度比单臂偏振计高一个数量级。
