岩画岩画Petroglyph凿刻或用矿物颜料描画在岩穴、石崖壁面及独立岩石上的线刻、浮雕和绘画。出现于旧石器时代，延续至中世纪，在世界各地都有发现。是研究不同时期、不同地区古代人类社会生活和精神生活的重要形象资料。旧石器时代的岩画以法国南部和西班牙北部的洞穴遗存为代表，描绘的内容主要是当时原始人的狩猎对象，如野马、猛犸象、野牛、鹿、犀牛等，也有少量熊、洞狮等猛兽的图像。多绘制得十分精美。旧石器时代末期至新石器时代之后，岩画分布十分广泛，在亚洲北部、西班牙东部、意大利南部、北美洲及非洲北部、中部和南部都有发现。此时期岩画中有复杂的狩猎、战争及各种仪式的场面。青铜时代和早期铁器时代的一些岩画，还出现了家畜、房屋、村落、宗教仪式、锄耕、战争掠夺等图形。中国在黑龙江、内蒙古、甘肃、青海、新疆、西藏、广西、云南、贵州、四川及江苏等地，都有古代岩画。从内容来看，中国的岩画可分为南方、北方两大系统。北方地区的岩画多表现动物、人物、狩猎及各种符号，以内蒙古阴山岩画为代表，与中亚、西伯利亚等地的岩画有相似之处。南方地区的岩画除描绘动物、狩猎外，还表现采集、房屋、村落、宗教仪式等。江苏连云港将军崖岩画并绘有农作物。中国境内岩画的年代，还不十分确切，有待进一步研究。
