禅宗禅宗中国佛教宗派。以菩提达摩为中国始祖，故又称达摩宗；也因自称得佛心印，又称为佛心宗。达摩于北魏末活动于洛阳，倡二入四行之修禅原则，以《楞伽经》授徒。弟子有慧可，僧璨为再传。璨弟子为道信。信弟子弘忍立东山法门，为禅宗五祖。门下分赴两京弘法，名重一时。其中有神秀、惠能二人分立为北宗渐门与南宗顿门。神秀住荆州玉泉寺，晚年入京，为三帝国师，弟子有嵩山普寂、终南山义福；惠能居韶州曹溪宝林寺，门下甚众，以惠能为六祖。后为禅宗正宗。相传南北二宗之争，始自五祖弘忍选嗣法弟子。神秀作偈为：“身是菩提树，心如明镜台；时时勤拂拭，勿使惹尘埃。”忍以为未见本性。惠能也作一偈：“菩提本无树，明镜亦非台；本来无一物，何处惹尘埃。”忍以为得其禅之心要，故密授法衣，认可其嗣法地位。以后北宗主拂尘看净之渐修；南宗主张顿悟而即身成佛。认为舍离文字，直探心源，闻言当下大悟，顿见真如本性才是修禅正途。其禅法可概言为无所住而生其心，即由定发慧。惠能的《六祖坛经》为本宗代表著作，其他如《楞伽经》、《金刚经》、《大乘起信论》皆有重大影响。达摩宗始祖达摩立像禅宗六祖师像惠能弟子中最负盛名的是南岳怀让（677～744）与青原行思（？～740）。另有神会居洛阳荷泽寺，创荷泽宗，被尊为七祖。门下有磁州智如、益州南印等。怀让住南岳衡山，创南岳系。青原住江西吉安，创青原系。怀让弟子道一(709～788)尊称马祖。其门下怀海影响最大，称洪州禅。怀海弟子有黄檗希运，沩山灵佑。希运门人义玄（？～867）在河北镇州创临济宗。灵佑与其弟子仰山慧寂（814～890）创沩仰宗。行思门下石头希迁（700～790）一系数传至洞山良价，再传至曹山本寂，师徒共创曹洞宗。希迁另一弟子天皇道悟数传至义存（822～908），其门下师备之再传文益（885～958）创法眼宗，住金陵清凉寺；师备同门文偃（？～949）住韶州云门山，创云门宗。晚唐至五代，禅宗发展极盛。两宋之后，儒道释三教合流，禅宗风格略变。大量“公案”、“诵古”文字著述问世。宋代，临济宗中又分出方会（992～1049）所创之杨政宗和慧南（1002～1069）所创之黄龙宗。元明之后，禅净合流形势大成，禅宗衰微。禅宗流入朝鲜始于神秀门下之新罗僧信行（704～779），所传为北宗禅。马祖门下之道义则将南宗禅带到朝鲜（820）。越南禅宗最早为天喜禅派，为从僧璨受禅法之毗尼多流支（？～594）所创。南宋时，日僧荣西在天台山受法，禅宗临济黄龙派随传入日本；南宋末中国僧人东渡日本又传去杨岐禅法。13世纪初日僧道元又将曹洞禅法带至日本。稍晚从百丈怀海受禅法之无言通创无言通禅派；后更有黄龙系（一说云门系）的草堂禅派（11世纪）和临济系的竹林禅派（13世纪末）等。
