圆顶室  安置天文望远镜的建筑物,用以保护望远镜不受风沙、雨雪的侵袭,并防止外界温度变化对观测的不良影响。圆顶室通常是圆柱形结构,顶部是一个可作方位转动的半球壳体──圆顶。上面有两扇狭长的活动天窗,可沿水平方向分开。有的是一扇天窗,可在圆顶上作俯仰运动。大望远镜的圆顶的天窗内装有风帘,上面有一个比望远镜口径稍大的窗孔,让天体光线射入。为使风帘窗孔跟随望远镜旋转,采用圆顶随动装置。它主要是一个坐标转换器,将被观测天体的时角和赤纬转换成方位角和天顶距,输出信号被用来控制圆顶和风帘的运动。坐标转换器有模拟式和数字式两种,前者大多用旋转变压器作转换元件,后者多用实时输出的电子计算机。随动精度一般在 ±5┡~±1°之间。圆顶外表涂成银白色,以便能反射掉大部分太阳辐射。圆顶室还采取隔热措施,以减小室内温度变化对望远镜的影响。有的天文台还对室内的地板采取冷却措施,以防止上升气流破坏成像的质量。为消除外界振动的影响,圆顶运动力求平稳,圆顶室基础和地板应同望远镜基墩隔开。圆顶室内安置必要的辅助设施,如起吊装置,观测梯或观测椅等。圆顶室的高度应根据当地的温度脉动观测来选定,一般在25~30米之间。大口径恒星望远镜的圆顶室下面通常备有折轴式装置用的分光仪室,室内采取良好的保温措施,使昼夜温差尽量减小。
