临界等位面  研究密近双星的一个重要物理概念。假定两子星的密度分布的中心聚度很高,在相互引力作用下作圆轨道运动,子星的自转与公转同步,而且自转轴垂直于轨道平面,那么在与轨道角速度相同的旋转坐标系内,两子星的引力位和离心力位的合力位等于常值的点,就组成一个具有确定形状的曲面族,称为洛希等位面族。这是法国数学家洛希在十九世纪中叶首先提出的概念,它与平面圆型限制性三体问题中的雅可比零速度面族的概念是同一回事,前者是后者的一个分支。所谓临界等位面即指上述洛希等位面族中最小的和最大的、能同时包络两个子星的闭合曲面,又叫做最内接触面和最外接触面,或内洛希界面和外洛希界面。内临界等位面的存在,决定了子星表面的最大的形状和界限。当子星在演化膨胀过程中,体积充满临界等位面时,其表面物质的零速度曲面与之重合。这时,表面物质最容易从该子星逃逸。两子星物质交流的通道是两子星之间的内拉格朗日点L1。至于外临界面的存在,则决定了围绕两子星公共包层的最大形状和界限,其上也有类似内拉格朗日点的外拉格朗日点L2,它是双星物质流出双星系统的"溢口"。
