千里岩，又名千里岛、千里山。位于南黄海之中的36°15′57″n；121°23′09″e。岛形呈哑铃形。长0.82km，宽0.24km，面积为0.20km2。最高点海拔93.5m，距大陆最近点海阳市凤城码头47.7km。地形南北高而宽，中间底且狭窄，四周陡峭，奇岩林立，怪石峥嵘。该岛处于国防前哨，无居民。岛上设有国家海洋局海洋站一个，国际航标灯塔一座。岛南为外航线，岛北为内航线，是海上通行要地。环岛水深30m左右，周围有4个天然海湾，是船只避风场所。岛上鸟类资源丰富，有珍稀鸟类近百种，植物60多种。其中有名贵花日本茶花和药用植物金银花、枸杞子和柴胡等。岛上有20多处天然奇景，奇峰怪石险要壮观，风景秀丽。周围海域鲍鱼、海参等海珍品资源丰富。2001年11月24日，省环保局会同省海洋与渔业厅，对海阳千里岩海洋生态系统省级自然保护区进行评审。参加评审会的有省政府办公厅、省环保局、海洋与渔业厅、省生态学会、省海洋环境检测站、省渔技站、山东大学、烟台市环保局、烟台市海洋与渔业局、海阳市政府及有关部门的领导、专家共18人。专家组听取了海阳市建立自然保护区的汇报，查阅了有关资料。通过评审，专家组一致认为：一、千里岩岛及其周围海洋系统是我国暖温地区岛屿与海洋系统较为典型的代表，岛屿生态系统近二十年几乎无人为干扰，系统结构与功能完善，周围海域保持了海洋生态系统的完整性与自然性，对岛屿环境具有良好的服务功能，并且可为相类似地区提供海洋生态系统背暑二、保护区内生物多样性与类似区域相比具有典型性与代表性，岛屿生态系统中物种的丰富度同岛屿面积及离陆距离关系匹配，海洋生态系统第一性生产力水平较高，营养结构合理，生物量资源丰富，食牧网与营养级配合比例合理，可为同类型自然保护区提供范例。有中国分布北界常绿阔叶林区多成分存在，与同纬度大陆相比具有特殊意义。三、本区为鸟类迁徙的驿站，对鸟类资源的保护具有重要意义。同时，海域中分布有生物量较大的海洋珍稀经济动植物，可为同类品种养殖业提供遗传多样性资源。2002年1月25日，山东省人民政府以鲁政字[2002]35号文批复，建立海阳千里岩岛海洋生态系统省级自然保护区。自然保护区面积1823公顷，其中核心区52公顷，缓冲区207公顷，实验区1564公顷。
