生土建筑 主要用未焙烧而仅作简单加工的原状土为材料营造主体结构的建筑。生土建筑始于人工凿穴，已有悠久的历史。从古代留存的烽火台、墓葬和故城遗址等，可以看到古人用生土营造建筑物的情况。生土建筑分布广泛，几乎遍及全球。1981年法国巴黎蓬皮杜艺术和文化中心曾举办世界各地生土建筑展览。现在世界上约有 1/3的人口居住在生土建筑中。中国黄土高原63～64万平方公里范围内的乡村居民，大多仍然居住在窑洞及其他生土建筑中。由于地理条件、生活方式、历史传统、民族习俗的不同，各地区的生土建筑在施工技术和建筑风格上也各有特点，这已经成为各国建筑文化的组成部分。福建省永定地区的多层土楼堪称世界建筑的一个奇迹。 生土建筑按材料、结构和建造工艺区分，有黄土窑洞、土坯窑洞、土坯建筑、夯土墙或草泥垛墙建筑和各种"掩土建筑"，以及夯土的大体积构筑物。按营建方式和使用功能区分，则有窑洞民居、其他生土建筑民居和以生土材料建造的公用建筑(如城垣、粮仓、堤坝等)。 生土建筑可以就地取材，易于施工，造价低廉，冬暖夏凉，节省能源；它又融于自然，有利于环境保护和生态平衡。因此，这种古老的建筑类型至今仍然具有生命力。但是各类生土建筑都有开间不大,布局受限制,日照不足，通风不畅和潮湿等缺点，需要改进。
