抗沉性 船在破舱浸水后仍保持一定浮性和稳性而不至于沉没和倾覆的性能。要使船舶在营运中不因为碰撞、搁浅、触礁等造成破损而沉没，就要在构造上采取措施。主要措施是加大干舷,增加船的储备浮力（见船舶浮性）,设置水密舱壁及双层底把船体分隔成若干个水密舱室，一旦某些舱室破损进水，不至于扩展到其他舱室，使船体仍能浮于水面。 1912年 4月10日发生的"泰坦尼克"号海难，死难1490人。这一严重事件导致1914年制定了国际海上人命安全公约。此后各航运国家又多次举行国际会议并修订了这个公约。公约对航行于公海的船舶在抗沉性方面的要求作了详细规定。中华人民共和国船舶检验局颁布的《海船抗沉性规范》也作了类似的规定。如要求船舶破损后水线不超过舱壁甲板边线以下76毫米的安全限界线；两水密舱壁之间的距离不超过许可长度；进水后的剩余稳性高度客船不小于0.05米，其他船不小于零；非对称浸水时采取扶正措施后的横倾角客船不超过7°,其他船不超过12°等等。对甲板、船壳板、舱壁和双层底的设置和开口密性要求也有详细的规定。 计算可浸长度和许可长度，绘制可浸长度曲线和许可长度曲线是船舶设计中的一项重要工作。许可长度曲线是船舶从抗沉性角度进行合理分舱的依据。可浸长度是船舶满足下沉极限的理论上的最大舱壁间距。许可长度是考虑了破舱后进水体积不同于舱室总容积和各类船舶对抗沉性的不同要求等因素后，确定的实际允许的最大舱壁间距。船舶水密舱室的划分、水密舱壁的数量和间距除与抗沉性有关外，还与强度、制造和使用要求有关。舱壁越多，船的强度和抗沉性越容易得到保证，但是使用和制造不便。为了兼顾各项性能，设计程序是在保证强度的前提下，先按使用要求确定舱壁数量和位置，再按许可长度检查抗沉性。如果两水密舱壁间距小于该处许可长度，表示抗沉性得到保证,否则要再行调整,直至满足要求。 保证船舶抗沉性除在设计上采取措施外，还需要驾驶人员的谨慎驾驶，力求避免碰撞事故发生。同时船上还有一系列的发现、抢救、堵漏和排除措施，一旦发生破损事故也可及时脱险，使人命和财产免遭损失。
