高分子链的立体化学结构  包括几何异构和光学异构。几何异构主要指双烯类单体聚合后,双键两边的主链键是顺式还是反式。例如在聚异戊二烯中天然巴西橡胶是顺式结构,而古塔波胶则是反式结构,两者的物理性质有很大差异,顺式的密度和晶区熔点均较反式的低,而且反式结构的古塔波胶的结晶速率要大得多。一般,反式结构是部分结晶的硬塑料,而顺式结构是天然橡胶。如果高分子链的结构单元中有不对称碳原子,就存在光学异构。两个结构单元以相同的构型键接时称为m键接,以不相同的构型键接时称为 r键接。通过催化剂对立体构型键接有选择性的作用,可以得到很长的m键接序列,称为全同立构聚合物(图a)。如果得到很长的r键接序列,称为间同立构聚合物(图b)。上述两种聚合物都是有规立构聚合物。如果聚合催化剂对结构单元的键接无立体构型的选择作用,则得到m键接和r键接无序排列的序列,称为无规立构聚合物。    有规立构聚合物和无规立构聚合物在物理性质上有相当大的差别,例如:    无规立构聚合物由于分子链缺少规整性,不能结晶,而同一聚合物的有规立构者则是结晶性聚合物。
