北京天桥八怪三十年前北京天桥之形式与而今无甚差别。所歧异者唯一般卖艺人技术之不同耳。俗称有“八大怪”之说,就余所见所知者略述于下:赵瘸子之杠子,此人幼年武艺极有功夫,因踢腿用力太猛遂致残废,或有谓与人争斗被敌人打伤者。但以根半腿人而能在杠上耍练种种技术,此所以为怪也。韩麻子之相声,此人专以恢谐逗笑或学各种卖货声,甚有趣味。嘴极刻薄,其村野不堪入耳,有时亦能掉文骂人。观彼之形象甚为古怪,面紫多麻,其眉目间含有若干荡意。人人乐之口技,此人名姓余不甚记忆,因其“人人乐”三宇足可代表其技能,故吾人反将其姓名忽略焉。盖彼一人而能兼五六人说话,且能学各种雀鸟叫唤,并能学鸡猫猪狗声音。穷不怕白土撒字,彼能以白土子面用二指捏之向地上撤丈尺双钩大宇,颇有形象,如“一笔虎”、“一笔福”、“一笔寿”等大宇。呼胡李之洋铁壶,或谓其为山西省某酒店之伙计,因好唱被辞来京,遂在天桥自树一帜。以洋铁筒塞入鼻孔中,复将破洋铁壶悬于腰间,两手拉一梆子呼胡,一边走,一边拉,一边唱。所怪者“万人迷”三字是其自称之名词也。 怔米三之铁锤,此人年有六十余岁,面紫多麻,肥胖大肚。练就一身硬肉,有铁练流星锤一对,重有二十斤左右。每日在天桥把场子打好,即将上衣脱下,凸其肚皮,一手捣其铁练流星锤向肚中擂之三五次,即向观众要钱。只以铁锤锤肚为能,实技术中之一怪耳。腊溺高之山西小曲,此人余只闻其名,未见其面。所唱多系各码头调,类“呼胡李”一流。惟不甚知其详细,故亦无所叙述。其后为城内某邸闻知,喜其滑稽,传至府中,赏以侍卫钱粮,供各福晋妇女之消遣,为开心去闷之计耳。以上八怪为三十年前天桥一带之生意人,至今无一存者。其中或为余所亲见或余所耳食,虽系远年旧闻,亦可为补阙之文字也。
