张骞(?~前114)  西汉外交家。汉中成固(今陕西城固)人。汉武帝建元元年(前140)为郎。武帝想联合大月氏(即月氏)共击匈奴,张骞应募任使者,于建元二年出陇西,经匈奴,被俘。在匈奴十年余,娶妻生子,但却始终秉持汉节。后逃脱,西行至大宛(今苏联费尔干纳盆地),经康居(今苏联锡尔河中游地带),抵达大月氏。大月氏先为匈奴所迫,辗转西迁,这时已定居妫水(今阿姆河)北岸,又统领了大夏(今阿富汗北部),决定在此安居乐业,无意报复匈奴。张骞至大夏,停留了一年多才返回。在归途中,张骞改从南道,依傍南山,企图避免被匈奴发现,但仍为匈奴所得,又被拘留一年多。元朔三年(前126),匈奴内乱,张骞乘机逃回汉朝,向汉武帝刘彻详细报告了西域情况,武帝授以太中大夫。张骞在大夏时,得知由蜀(今四川盆地)西南取道身毒(今印度)可通大夏,因劝武帝开西南夷道,但为昆明夷所阻,未能通。元朔六年,张骞以校尉随大将军卫青征匈奴,有功,封博望侯。元狩二年(前121),为卫尉,与李广出右北平(今河北东北部)击匈奴;张骞因迟误军期,当斩,用侯爵赎罪,得免为庶人。后张骞复劝武帝联合乌孙(在今伊犁河流域), 武帝乃拜骞为中郎将, 率三百人,牛羊金帛以万数,出使乌孙。张骞到乌孙,分遣副使往大宛、康居、月氏、大夏等旁国。乌孙遣使送张骞归汉,并献马报谢。元鼎二年(前115),张骞还,拜大行。翌年卒。他所遣副使后相继引西域诸国使者来汉;乌孙后来终于与汉通婚,共击破匈奴。汉能通西域,由张骞创立首功。因张骞在西域有威信,后来汉所遣使者多称博望侯以取信于诸国。相传葡萄、苜蓿、石榴、胡桃、胡麻等皆为张骞自西域传入中土,未必尽然;但张骞对开辟从中国通往西域的丝绸之路有卓越贡献,至今举世称道。西域诸国当时无史籍记载,张骞所报道,备载于《史记》、《汉书》中,是治中亚史所根据的原始资料, 具有重要价值。(见彩图)
