物质的社会关系和思想的社会关系 历史唯物主义划分的社会关系的两种基本类别。物质的社会关系是人们在社会物质生活和生产过程中发生的不以他们的意识和意志为转移的关系，主要指人们在物质资料生产过程中必然形成的生产关系；也包括人们由血缘形成的亲族关系。生产关系必须与生产力的一定发展阶段的状况相适合，它的形成、发展和改变是以生产力的状况为基础的。而生产力的状况不是人们所能自由选择的。因而物质的社会关系是一种不依赖于社会意识的社会存在。思想的社会关系是通过人们的社会意识而形成的关系，是一定的物质关系及其规定的物质利益的反映，如政治关系、道德关系、思想文化关系等。它以物质的社会关系为基础和根源，并随着物质关系的改变而改变。历史上众多的思想家只看到思想的社会关系以及体现这种关系的国家政权等机构和设施都具有一定的思想原因，由此作出人们的意识决定整个社会面貌的唯心主义论断，他们没有在思想的社会关系之外看到物质的社会关系，没有追究思想的社会关系所依据的思想观点的物质根源，不懂得物质的社会关系对思想的社会关系的最后决定作用。历史唯物主义在人类思想史上第一次区分了物质的社会关系和思想的社会关系，并说明了它们的各自特点、相互关系及其历史演变过程。它指出和强调物质的社会关系对于思想的社会关系是第一性的、起决定作用的，思想的社会关系是第二性的、派生的。同时，也指出思想的社会关系对于物质的社会关系的形成、巩固和发展，具有不可忽视的反作用。物质的社会关系和思想的社会关系的总和构成一定的社会关系体系。无论物质的社会关系或思想的社会关系，都是具体的和历史的，在人类历史的不同阶段具有不同的性质和形式。 历史唯物主义对物质的社会关系和思想的社会关系的区分以及对两者关系的阐述，对科学地说明社会历史和揭示社会发展规律具有决定性的意义。
