机械工业 以机械加工为主要工艺的生产技术装备的工业部门。包括农业机械制造工业、工业设备制造工业、交通设备制造工业、建筑及筑路机械制造工业、生产用其他机械制造工业、电子工业、生活用机械制造工业、生产用金属品工业、日用金属品工业、机械设备及金属品修理工业等。机械工业的制造水平直接影响着国民经济的发展速度和现代化程度。 1949年以前，中国的机械工业基础十分薄弱，仅在上海、天津、沈阳、大连等沿海城市有些技术落后、设备陈旧的中小型机械厂，只能修配和生产一些简单的机电产品。中华人民共和国建立后，机械工业有了很大的发展。截至1980年,仅机械工业部系统,就拥有机床、发电设备、冶金设备、矿山设备、通用机械、汽车、轴承等近100个行业,能生产2.6万多种机电产品,为全国3000多个大中型建设项目提供了大量的机械设备，其中还有一批具有一定技术水平的重大成套设备。例如，为冶金工业提供了年产150万吨钢铁联合企业的成套设备,为煤炭工业提供了年产 250万吨竖井煤矿成套设备，为化学工业提供了年产30万吨合成氨和24万吨尿素的成套设备，与此同时，还生产了一批技术水平较高的设备，各类高精度机床已发展到110种,并已向97个国家和地区出口机床、锻压设备、冷冻设备、电动机、轴承、量具、刃具等 137种产品。对外援建了重型机器厂、电线厂、轴承厂、标准件厂等50多个项目。1980年以后，机械工业得到了很大发展。1985年，机械工业全行业产值达2235亿元。
