科学理论 具有某种逻辑结构的并经过一定实验检验的概念系统。标志着人的认识在实践过程中从现象到本质的深化，由经验水平提高到了离经验较远、抽象程度较高的水平，对事物获得了比较全面的了解。科学理论往往是通过科学假说、经过反复的实践检验确立起来的。然而实践检验本身是历史的、相对的，因此已经形成的理论的真理性也是历史的、相对的。科学理论和科学假说的区别在于,前者在实践检验中显示出自身的确定性,而后者则带有或然性。有些科学理论是由经验定律上升而来的，它们之间虽然也无绝对严格的界线，但科学理论往往表现为若干经验定律的综合。成熟的科学理论通常具有由概念、原理、定律等按照逻辑关系组成的演绎结构，其核心是科学定律。这种结构通过建立理论概念和可观察量之间的对应关系而与经验事实相联系。随着科学的发展，科学家在表述科学理论时总是力求达到符号化和形式化，使之成为严密的公理化体系（见公理化和形式化）。科学理论的功能在于解释各种有关的现象，预言事物的未来。因此，科学理论能够对人类的实践活动显示出指导作用，在人类认识世界和改造世界的过程中展现其巨大的威力。 科学理论是人类一定历史时期的认识成果，因而它随着人类实践的发展而发展，或者根据新的事实加以修正和充实，使自身更加丰富和深化；或者在新的事实面前暴露出根本性的缺点，而被新的理论所替代。科学理论的发展具有革命性和继承性。革命性在于改变旧理论的基本概念和原理，突破和超越旧理论，并且能够解释旧理论所不能解释的现象；继承性或者表现为理论概念的延伸，或者表现为把旧理论作为一种特例包含在新理论之中。
