淮南矿区  中国较早达到年产千万吨的煤矿区。矿区位于安徽北部,横跨淮河两岸,有铁路支线与淮南铁路(蚌埠至裕溪口)和津浦铁路接轨,水陆运输都很方便。淮南矿区由淮南、潘谢两块煤田构成,煤层厚,质量好,储量多,原煤发热量6000千卡/千克以上,中灰、低硫、低磷,为炼焦的良好配煤。淮南煤田开采历史悠久,从1921~1949年累计采出煤炭1030万吨。1949年后,在恢复、改造老矿的基础上,建设了大批新井。1959年,原煤产量达到了1000万吨,最高年产量曾达1614万吨。近几年,老矿井陆续报废,煤炭产量有所下降,但仍保持在800万吨以上。现在的生产矿井在淮河南岸。北岸潘集新区自1973年开始建设,已开工建设的潘集一号、二号、三号矿井,均为设计能力年产300万吨的大型矿井。潘谢煤田表土层厚,流沙大,含水层多,地温高,建井难度大,采用特殊凿井方法施工,在复合井壁施工工艺、软岩支护和工作面预注浆工艺等方面,都取得了成绩。
