蚜虫同翅目的1科。前翅4~5斜脉,触角次生感觉圈圆形,腹管管状的蚜虫。含107 属2280种。分布遍及世界各地。中国已知260种,分布遍及全国各地。其中小蚜属、黑背蚜属及否蚜属为中国特有属。体长1.5~4.9毫米,多数约2毫米。有时被蜡粉,但缺蜡片。触角6节,少数5节,罕见4节,感觉圈圆形,罕见椭圆形,末节端部常长于基部。眼大,多小眼面,常有突出的3小眼面眼瘤。 喙末节短钝至长尖。腹部大于头部与胸部之和。前胸与腹部各节常有缘瘤。腹管通常管状,长常大于宽,基部粗,向端部渐细,中部或端部有时膨大,顶端常有缘突,表面光滑或有瓦纹或端部有网纹,罕见生有或少或多的毛,罕见腹管环状或缺。尾片圆椎形、指形、剑形、三角形、五角形、盔形至半月形。尾板末端圆。表皮光滑、有网纹或皱纹或由微刺或颗粒组成的斑纹。体毛尖锐或顶端膨大为头状或扇状。有翅蚜触角通常6节,第3或3及4或3~5节有次生感觉圈。前翅中脉通常分为3支,少数分为2支。后翅通常有肘脉2支,罕见后翅变小,翅脉退化。翅脉有时镶黑边。本科蚜虫的寄生植物几乎包括被子植物和裸子植物的松柏纲的所有的科。有些种类则以苔藓植物、蕨类植物和木贼科植物为寄主。部分种类营异寄主全周期生活:在木本寄主与草本寄主间循序转换寄主植物,以木本寄主为第一寄主,在其上以受精卵越冬,春季孵化为干母,孤雌繁殖2或3代。初夏发生有翅迁移蚜转移到草本的第二寄主上孤雌繁殖数代至二十余代,秋末发生有翅的性母蚜和雄蚜从第二寄主迁飞到第一寄主上。有翅性母卵胎生出雌性蚜,雌蚜与有翅雄蚜交配产卵越冬。多数种类为同寄主全周期,没有上述木本与草本寄主间的转移,只在同类寄主植物间转移。雌雄性蚜均无翅,有时雄蚜有翅,以受精卵越冬。许多种类或种以下的单元在热带、亚热带、温室或温暖的小生境全年孤雌生殖,不出现越冬的受精卵。常造成寄主植物组织变形或变色,或节间变短。本科多数种类为寡食性或单食性,少数为多食性,部分种类是粮、棉、油、麻、茶、糖、菜、烟、果、药和树木等经济植物的重要害虫。由于迁飞扩散寻找寄主植物时要反复转移尝食,所以可以传播许多种植物病毒病,造成更大的为害。其中包括麦长管蚜、麦二岔蚜、棉蚜、桃蚜及萝卜蚜等重要害虫。本科蚜斑石蚜属化石发现于苏联泰梅尔半岛的中生代白垩纪地层,随后瘤矽藻蚜属及毛波石蚜属出现于波罗的海附近地区的第三纪。
