非局部热动平衡 恒星大气明显地不处于热动平衡状态。各类恒星大气偏离热动平衡的程度各不相同。对偏离热动平衡不大的恒星大气，可以引入局部热动平衡假设来近似地表述它的热状态。但在许多情况下，如太阳色球、日冕、有延伸大气的恒星、行星状星云、星云、星际物质等的物理状态，偏离热动平衡较大，甚至局部热动平衡假设也不能适用。这种物理状态称为非局部热动平衡(NLTE)。 在非局部热动平衡状态下，原子的激发、电离、辐射和物质的相互作用等，都不能简单地用一个局部温度来表述。如果所研究的天体是稳定的，表述它的物理量应不随时间变化或只随时间作缓慢的变化。这种情况下，可以应用稳定性条件。处于各种状态(电离级或激发态)的原子数目应不随时间变化，据此建立起原子的统计平衡（即粗糙平衡）方程。它表示在单位时间内到达某一状态的原子总数与离开这一状态的原子总数相等。由于原子的统计平衡又和辐射场密切相关，所以在处理非局部热动平衡问题时，必须把辐射转移方程（见辐射转移理论）和原子的统计平衡方程组联立起来求解。
