太空育种太空育种就是将某些植物的种子装入宇宙飞船，待航天器返回地面后再对种子进行种植和培育。这是航天技术、生物技术与农业技术相结合的产物。在太空中遨游后的种子，再经种植选育后与普通种子有什么不同呢？由于空间环境中高能粒子辐射、微重力、高真空等综合因素，使生物材料出现了某些地球上不能获得的突变，如对植物种子产生诱变作用，引起植物遗传基因的变异，通过地面进行选优及筛选，获得具有优良性状的品种，培育出高产、优质、早熟、抗病良种。美国和前苏联在太空活动初期就开始了各类种子搭载试验。我国自1987年以来，成功地利用返回式卫星进行了9次搭载农作物种子及试管育苗等试验，其中包括有关粮食、蔬菜、花卉等高附加值作物。1999年，我国成功发射神舟一号航天飞船，而太空育种的步伐也是同样跟进，自发射神舟一号开始到去年发射神舟五号，我国先后将甜瓜、番茄、西瓜、向日葵、蝴蝶兰、烟草、雅安黄连等花卉、蔬菜、药材的种子送入太空，在“神舟”五号载人航天飞船中还搭载了来自祖国宝岛台湾的农作物种子。初步试验结果表明，从搭载物品中可精选出优质的品种，其果实大小、营养物质的含量以及抗病虫害等方面均有显著改善。例如，经航天育种所生产的蔬菜比普通蔬菜营养素含量大幅度提高。维生素含量是普通蔬菜的281.5％，对人体有益的微量元素铁的含量提高7.3％，锌提高21.9％，胡萝卜素提高5.9％。四川1999年开始种植的太空蕃茄、青椒等农作物的平均产量增加了10-20，而且果型增大，品质提高，抗病害能力和可逆性增强，不需为抗病虫害而大量喷洒有毒农药。目前，我国已有13个品种通过国家审定，43个品系在大面积种植推广。在我国北京、上海、黑龙江等地都已建立了太空种子繁育基地。此外，太空环境还可以使牧草、树木诱变，从而筛选出有益的变异，如产量高、经济性能高、速生等优良性状，从而形成太空草业、太空林业等，促进经济发展。
