计算机辅助工程 计算机辅助设计(CAD)、计算机辅助制造(CA-M)、计算机辅助测试(CAT)等的统称，英文缩写CAE。从广义上讲,CAE包括工厂生产和管理方面的所有计算机控制系统，如规划、设计、制图、制造、分析、试验、维护、数据和文件管理、智能控制、系统工程等。CAE能提高工厂自动化程度，改善产品质量，降低成本，缩短生产周期。 CAE的发展是从 50年代后期开始的。美国麻省理工学院首先制定了CAD/CAM计划,到1963年获得了一系列的成果。当时只有美国通用汽车公司(GM)、洛克希德公司和国际商业机器公司 (IBM)等大公司和极少数大学从事计算机辅助工程系统的开发工作。通常把60年代的 CAE称为第一代CAE。70年代,在微型计算机和图形终端基础上发展起来的计算机图形学对 CAE的开发起了重要推动作用。但当时计算机制图还局限于布线设计。通常把70年代的CAE称为第二代CAE。80年代出现高性能、多功能的工程工作站和自动化水平较高的CAE系统。如IBM公司的EDS系统，CALMA公司的CARDS 330系统,日本富士通公司的ICAD/PCB系统等。通常把80年代的 CAE称为第三代CAE。CAE开始进入实用和普及的阶段。 现在CAE正开始进入第四代。它的主要特点是:①应用人工智能技术，建立知识库和推理机,构造CAE专家系统。②应用计算机局部网络,建立分布式的柔性CAE系统。现已出现工厂自动化网络 (MAP)和工程办公室自动化网络(TOP)。MAP/TOP通过建立工厂信息流的自动化，来保证实现物质流的自动化，从而促使整个工厂生产自动化。
