土壤发生层简称土层,为土壤剖面上表现出的水平层状构造。反映了土壤形成过程中物质的迁移、转化和累积的特点。其野外鉴定特征主要包括土壤颜色、质地、结构、松紧度和新生体等。一定的土壤发生层与一定的成土过程相联系。腐殖质化过程广泛分布于自然界,故各种土壤剖面上部大都具有暗色的腐殖质层。淋溶和淀积过程对土壤剖面的分化具有重要意义,在寒带或寒温带针叶林植被下强有机酸参与的淋溶过程(灰化过程)形成强酸性的灰白色土层——灰化层;热带、亚热带生物—气候条件下,伴随强烈风化作用的土壤淋溶过程,形成富含铁铝氧化物的土层;干旱与半干旱环境中与可溶盐分淋失和积聚的不同强度相联系的各种成土过程,形成盐土层、钙积层和石膏层等。此外,与土壤粘化过程相联系的土壤发生层有粘化层;与土壤氧化还原过程相联系的有潜育层;与土壤碱化过程相联系的有碱化层等。一种类型的土壤往往存在几个成土过程,不同的土壤则具有不同的成土过程组合,因此也就有不同土壤发生层的组合。如暖温带阔叶林下的棕壤具有两个成土过程,即腐殖质化过程和粘化过程,其剖面主要由腐殖质层、粘化层和母质层构成;温带草甸草原植被下的黑钙土,具有明显的腐殖质累积过程和钙化过程,其剖面主要由腐殖质层、钙积层和母质层构成。土壤发生层及其组合是土壤分类的主要依据,也是决定土壤肥力高低的重要因素。
