引文索引 利用文献引证关系检索相关文献的索引。 简史 1873年美国出版了供律师查阅法律判例的检索工具《谢泼德引文》。20世纪50年代，美国E.加菲尔德从中受到启发，研制出用计算机辅助编制的引文索引。他主办的费城科学情报研究所(ISI)先后创办了 《科学引文索引》(SCI，1963年创刊)、《社会科学引文索引》(SSCI,1973年创刊)和《艺术与人文科学引文索引》(AHCI，1978年创刊)等 3种引文索引刊物,并建立了引文索引数据库。在加菲尔德的引文索引影响下，美国普林斯顿大学、苏联阿塞拜疆科技情报所等也编制了引文索引，停刊多年的《谢泼德引文》也更名重新出版。此后加菲尔德和美国科学史专家 D.J.de S.普赖斯又在引文索引的基础上研制出引文分析技术。 结构 引文索引以某一文献 (包括作者、题名、发表年份、出处等基本数据)作为标目,标目下著录引用或参考过该文献的全部文献及出处。它主要供用户从被引文献查找引用文献。一般的引文索引刊物除了引文索引外，往往还附有来源索引、机构索引和轮排主题索引。来源索引主要著录近期发表的有引文的文献 (称来源文献或引用文献),它以作者为标目，标目下著录文种、篇名、出处、参考文献篇数及作者地址等。机构索引以作者所属机构为标目，标目下列出该机构最近发表文献的作者及文献出处，它可以反映某机构科研人员最近发表文献的情况。轮排主题索引是从来源文献题名关键词中每次选取 2个作为标目进行轮排而成的，是一种词对式关键词索引(见关键词索引)。通过这些辅助索引，用户可以从引用文献的著者、主题、地域或机构等多种途径检索到相关文献。 特点 ①引文索引克服了使用传统的主题索引和分类索引有时难以选定主题词或分类号的缺点，提供一种方便而实用的检索途径。②标引时无需进行主题分析、查看主题词表或分类表，便于计算机自动处理。③引文索引存在收录文献不全，篇幅过大，因引文的不可靠性有时造成误检等缺点。 功用 引文索引多用于新兴学科、交叉学科及其他复杂课题的文献检索。通过引文分析，可以揭示一些重要科学发现之间的内在联系，预测科学技术的发展方向。引文分析得到的数据，还可以用于评价科技文献的价值、科技人员及科研机构的工作成绩和水平。引文分析技术为文献计量学、科学计量学的研究提供了新的方法。
