天地之性与气质之性 中国宋明理学人性论的一对重要范畴。天地之性的最初含义,系指自然界的本性,子产说:"哀乐不失,乃能协于天地之性,是以长久"(《左传》昭公六年)。后来"天地之性"又混同于《中庸》的"天命之谓性",有了人性论的意义。汉代王充说:"天地之性,能更生火,不能使灭火复燃;能更生人,不能令死人复见"(《论衡·论死》),是指自然界的本性;他又说:"人禀天地之性,怀五常之气,或仁或义,性术乖也"(《论衡·本性》),这是指天地所赋予人的善恶本性。张载认为,人性有两层,一是天地之性,一是气质之性。天地之性即禀太虚之气而成,太虚之气的本性也就是人和物的共同本性,是先天的本性,也是善的来源,"性于人无不善,系其善反不善反而已",天地之性对于人来说是好的,人接受的不同只在于善于反省和不善于反省而已。他还把性说成永恒之物,因而得出"知死生之不亡者,可与言性矣"的结论。"气质之性"指每个人生成之后,由于禀受阴阳二气的不同而形成的特殊本性,说"人之刚柔、缓急,有才与不才,气之偏也"。气质之性对外物有所追求,张载又称为"攻取之性"。他说:"攻取,气之欲;口腹于饮食,鼻舌于臭味,皆攻取之性也"。它是人性中恶的来源。张载主张改变"气质之性",回到"天地之性",他说,虽然"人之气质美恶,与贵贱夭寿之理,皆是所受定分",但"气质恶者,学即能移",通过学习克服追求外物的情欲,"使动作皆中礼",则能"变化气质,从而恢复本来的善性,即"天地之性"。 张载以他的天地之性和气质之性的学说,总结了历史上人性善恶的争论,把地主阶级的人性论思想发展到一个新的阶段,成为宋明理学唯心主义思想体系的重要组成部分。朱熹极力推崇张载的人性论思想,说"极有功于圣门,有补于后学",前人未曾说到。朱熹接受了张载的思想,亦用天地之性、气质之性的概念来解决人性论的问题,"论天地之性,则专指理言;论气质之性,则以理与气杂而言之"。他与张载的不同之处是,从理气关系论证天地之性与气质之性,认为天地之性即是理,纯粹至善,气质之性受气禀所限,是恶的来源。气禀不同,性亦不同,如明珠掉进水中,水有清浊,性有善恶。从理学唯心论立场,对人性论作了总结。这一思想,后来受到一些哲学家的批判。罗钦顺从理气为一物的观点出发,反对分天地之性,气质之性。王廷相提出性由气生的论点。颜元、戴震等人都反对有所谓天地之性。
