竹子，在我国的文化史上源远流长，它与松、梅并誉为“岁寒三友”，与梅、兰、菊一样有“君子”之称。竹种更是多姿多样，风情万种，除用途广泛、经济价值较高外，还有特殊的旅游观赏和审美价值。福建省华安的竹类植物园就是这样一个包容万千的旅游胜地。竹类植物园创建于1992年11月，址在城关九龙平湖北侧的龟仔垅山，占地950亩，现已从全国各地引种30属330种竹种，并初具规模。园内又分为五区一园：即竹种分类区、观赏竹种区、生产区、珍稀竹种引种区、纪念竹林区和民俗风情园。竹子从用途和经济效益讲，可称上"一竹多用济民生"：竹材可供造纸、生产人造板、日用品、竹工艺品；竹笋是上乘佳肴；竹头可以雕刻；竹枝可以加工竹扫帚；竹叶可以用于生产饮料或作出口包装用品；从竹材中提取的鲜竹沥、竹璜等可作中药；竹屑是培育菌中皇后竹荪的优质原。从观赏和审美角度看：竹子四季常青，潇洒多姿，姿态优美，独具风韵。竹子“未出土时便有节，及凌云处尚虚心",象征着虚心文雅的特征，高风亮节的品格。而一片片一丛丛郁郁葱葱的竹林，使人们自然想到它们不畏逆境、不惧艰辛、宁折不曲的品质。走入竹林，到处茫茫竹海，清荫通幽，惹人情思无限情怀悠远，无意中静静地陶冶了人的情操，净化了人的心灵，升华了人的品格。当你仔细端详每一棵竹子、每一丛竹林，你或许还会想象到那就是一位位婀娜多姿的青春少女，是那样的纯洁、清秀、傲立。由于华安的地理条件特殊，全国大部分地区的竹子在此都能得到培养成长，使得该竹种园成为目前国内种植面积最大、竹类品种最多、属性最全、种园功能最齐的竹子基地，也是竹类科研教学、竹子生产推广、旅游观光休闲、学术交流示范的综合性基地。今年，在竹种园内又建立了高山族和畲族民俗风情园，作为竹种园内的旅游配套服务项目。那建筑风格独特、歌舞表演动人的民俗风情，为竹类植物园增添了一朵瑰丽的奇葩。
